In which formats can I send my drawings?

Our first preference is DXF format, as this we can import directly to the software of the laser device. We can give the quickest feedback with a DXF file.

May I also send other file formats?

Yes, as a rule, we can also manage opening and processing other common file types such as PDF (vector), DWG, AI, CDR etc. But in such a case, converting the files could take more time and there have always been anomalies seen when converting from one format to another.

But if I have a drawing only on paper?

  • We can also provide digitalising a scanned hand drawing. In such a case we charge an hourly fee.
  • In case of drawings on paper, the first step should be formalising high-quality digital drawings (PDF+DXF).

What should be the scale / size of the drawing?

  • Our work process (from price tender to product) is the quickest if your drawing is in a 1:1 scale, i.e. the drawing is as large as the detail being cut.
  • It is particularly good if at least one measurement has been added to the drawing as a reference for checking the scale.

Does the drawing have to include all dimensions?

  • For cutting, we only need the contour (cutting lines).
  • But sometimes there have been confusions regarding the dimensions of the details – to avoid that, it is good to add a measurement to at least one element for a reference.

May I place several details on one drawing?

  • It is good to place all details cut from the same material to the same drawing.
  • It is advisable to send layouts of different materials (thicknesses) even as separate files. If details with different thicknesses are in the same file, these should be clearly differentiated.

How much space should there be between details?

  • A good space between details is at least 2 mm.
  • Details of hard materials (plywood, MDF, acrylic) may be placed closer, but details of soft materials should be farther apart.
  • If you have many details and wish to do the layout yourself, feel free to contact us to specify specific parameters.

How large a drawing / layout may I make?

  • The maximum area we can cut is 1600 x 900mm.
  • The maximum size of a drawing depends on the size on the material.
  • We use plywood sheets in two pre-cut sizes:
    • 1525 x 600 mm
    • 1525 x 900 mm
  • If you have many details and wish to do the layout yourself, feel free to contact us to specify the sizes of the materials.

How to separate a cutting line and etching on the drawing?

  • We use different drawing layers for that.
  • Our work files usually include the following layers:
    • Outer contour (black/white line)
    • Inner contour (blue line)
    • Etching (engraved line, red line)
    • Scan (fill i.e. etched fill, brown line)
  • As a rule, you do not need to differentiate between inner and outer contours yourself – we use it only in special cases to regulate the order of cutting.

For marking a filled-in etched surface, do not use the Fill command. As a rule, the Fill command of drawing programs creates a second boundary (fill boundary) to the surface, which we do not need (overlapping lines!).

Are overlapping lines a problem?

  • Yes. Any excessive noise on the drawing requires attention and therefore wastes time (i.e. your money).
  • As a rule, we check the drawing before cutting.
  • The problem of overlapping lines is particularly prevalent in different architectural drawing programs.

How can I reduce the price of my order?

  • The price can be reduced by having as precise drawings as possible. This way most of our time (and your money) is spent on cutting and not on preparing files.
  • When preparing a drawing, follow these principles:
    • The drawing is a DXF file
    • The drawing is in the correct scale (which is actually being cut)
    • The figure has at least one measurement or the order has a clear reference to the size of the details.
    • Details of the same material (thickness) are on the same drawing.

How thick materials KR Stuudio cuts?

KR Stuudio cuts the following light materials:

  • Plywood (up to 8mm)
  • Wood (up to 18mm)
  • MDF-plate (up to 6mm)
  • Acrylic (up to 10mm)
  • Plastics (up to 10mm)
  • Foams
  • Paperboards, papers
  • Cardboards
  • Fabrics

Does KR Stuudio cut metals?

  • No. We do not cut metals

What materials can be etched?

  • Nearly all materials, which can be cut, can also be etched.
  • In addition, we can also etch stainless steel.

Can you cut the customer’s material?

  • Yes, it is possible.
  • As a rule, we have the more commonly used materials in stock. You can always ask for a price tender for cutting from the customer’s material.

Will the cut surface be blackened?

  • As a rule, the cut surface remains clean.
  • The surface is blackened only in case of thick materials (8mm plywood, 6mm mdf), but this can easily be removed with a damp cloth.
  • The cut edge of acrylic (Plexiglas) remains clean and glassy.

How is the price of the cutting/etching formed?

  • We calculate the price of cutting on minute basis from the working time of the machine.

What is the minimum order size?

  • There are no restrictions on the number of ordered details.
  • In case of our very small orders, our minimum charge is 18€.

How to reduce the price of cutting?

  • The price of cutting depends on the time spent on it. Therefore follow the following principles:
    • The details are of a material with optimal thickness. Cutting a thicker material takes more time. If possible, prefer a thinner material.
    • Layout of the details on the drawing (material) is optimal.
    • As a rule, cutting a larger amount is more cost-efficient.

What is product development for KR Stuudio?

  • As product development, we consider the process, through which we get from a pencil sketched vision to a working prototype and successful product in cooperation with the customer.

Is a drawing always necessary for introducing one’s idea?

  • A drawing gives a good overview, but you can come and introduce your idea to us also with a very “raw” sketch. Often the best solutions have been born from a “clean slate”.

What has KR Stuudio done so far?

  • So far we have helped our customers to develop for example product displays, gift boxes, packagings, lights, advertisement displays etc.
  • In order to provide full solutions, we aim at sticking to the materials and technologies that are the most available for us (lightweight materials and laser cutting)

Does KR Stuudio make/design only wooden items?

  • Certainly not. Most of our people are mechanical engineers active in their field (mechanical engineering, product development, electronics) and so we have a very wide basis for handling different problems in mechanical engineering.
  • We have carried out several projects including underwater LED-lights, photo booths, 3D-printers, CNC-machines, utility traylers etc

How is the price of a development project formed?

  • The volume of a development project highly depends on the specific project. We charge on an hourly basis. It is impossible to estimate the time spent with the precision of a minute, but we certainly try to give the customer an estimate in advance.

How is the price of the services of KR Stuudio formed?

  • In developing the price, we consider the following components:
    • Preparations (preparing files, computer graphics)
    • Cutting (material and cutting time)
    • Follow-up processing (finish, assembly, packaging)
    • Additional expenses (transport etc.)

  • Reducing the volume of any work stage will reduce the total price.
  • The minimum price of an order is 18€ (includes VAT)

Can orders be made from outside Tallinn?

  • In Estonia we use all common quick delivery services.
  • When sending packages outside Estonia, we the postal services of either SmartPost (Finland) or Omniva.
  • The price for quick delivery services (Post24, SmartPost) within Estonia is 2.95€

How will I receive my goods?

  • You can come and pick up the order at our studio at Tondi 17B, Tallinn.
  • Upon the customer’s request, we will mail the goods using the requested postal service.

Does the price of the order depend on the number of details?

  • The price of the order depends highly on the number of details. If you order the cutting of very small details, there may be a situation where the price of cutting 1 detail (minimum price 18€) and 10 details is the same.
  • Please make sure to always note the number of required details in the price inquiry (the price per one detail is never the same when you cut 1 detail or 100 details).
